Effie Calavaza (1928- )
Well known for her distinctive silver snake and turquoise nugget design, Effie Calavaza started working in the mid-1950s. Learning from and working with her husband, Juan Calavaza, Effie has passed her design along to her daughters Georgiana Yatsatti, Gloria Jean Garcia and Susie Calavaza. At first, Effie and her husband signed their work together with JUAN C.—ZUNI . Later, she and her daughters all signed their work with EFFIE C.—ZUNI
Effie used sleeping beauty turquoise and in further research it mentions that Effie used blue turquoise in the eyes of the snake & her daughters used Red Coral. In Zuni belief, the snake is a positive sign of rebirth and renewal.
The belt buckle measures 3-1/8″ x 2-1/8″. The bolo measures 2-1/2″ long by 1-3/4″ wide. Every piece is signed EFFIE C. ZUNI

This won’t last long. It’s a 14K Etruscan, Cannetille, Filigree pendant, charm, necklace, fob. This pendant is very well done and the detail is exquisite. The first synthetic Alexandrite was introduced in 1909. Synthetic color-change corundum was grown and used as an Alexandrite imitation. The color change in Alexandrite-like synthetic sapphire is bluish-purple changing to reddish-purple. In 1912, Alexandrite was included as a birthstone on the American National Association of Jewelers list.
The pendant is not marked with a karat gold mark, but was tested and it is 14K. We believe the four small stones at the top to be rubies, though they were not tested.
The pendant measures 1 ¼” in length on the plus side. It is 1 1’16” in diameter. The Alexandrite stones are approximately 9mm x 7mm with a very lively color change. PRICE: $795.00.

We are often asked if we have Native American jewelry. Yes! We have a large selection of signed and unsigned pieces. Bracelets, belt buckles, rings, necklaces, pins and more. Jewelry-making has been part of the artistic tradition of many Pueblos and Nations for over a century. The Spanish first introduced silversmithing to Navajo and other Native American Indian people in the Southwest. Since then, the Pueblos and Tribes have developed their own unique styles and perfected techniques that they pass down from generation to generation. A small corner of our available Native American jewelry is shown above with a few featured pieces shown below.
